    Did You know?

Nearly one-third of Americans have high cholesterol, which raises the risk for heart disease, the number one cause of death, according to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC).

    What is high cholesterol?

Cholesterol is a fatty substance that travels through your bloodstream on proteins called lipoproteins. When you have too much cholesterol in your blood, it can build up on the walls of your blood vessels and form plaque. High-density lipoprotein (HDL) is known as the “good” cholesterol because it absorbs cholesterol and carries it back to the liver, which then disposes it from the body. Low-density lipoprotein (LDL) is known as the “bad” cholesterol because it raises your risk of heart disease and stroke. Ideally, you want your HDL to be greater than 60 mg/dL (the higher, the better) and your LDL to be less than 100 mg/dL.

    What are the risk factors?

Some risk factors include family history, health conditions, and lifestyle factors, which include a diet that is high in saturated and trans fat, tobacco use, and lack of physical activity. Diabetics have a higher risk of hyperlipidemia because type 2 diabetes lowers HDL and raises LDL.

Take control of your health today

As a chronic condition, hyperlipidemia requires consistent monitoring and medical follow up. Pinnacle Health Management has teamed up with employers to offer eligible individuals a free support program to help you manage your high cholesterol more effectively and live a healthier life.

Important: Eligibility requirements apply. For employees to be eligible to enroll in the hyperlipidemia (high cholesterol) program, they must have a current diagnosis from a medical professional and that program must be offered by their employer through an active partnership with Pinnacle Health Management. Program incentives are subject to change and will vary by employer.
